Los Angeles-based Castro Motorsport know a thing or two about BMWs. Among their staff they count the first chap in SoCal to run an S52 (E36 M3) engine in an E30, and the first to fit an S54 (E46 M3) into an E30 M3. Their stock-in-trade is strapping superchargers and racy addenda to all manner of BMWs, and they're pretty darn good at it.
This 2002, fettled by Castro, has become something of an online celebrity. It represents a superb visual dichotomy, at once polished and detailed and rough 'n' ready; the paintwork glistens and the panels are arrow-straight, yet the exterior trim is largely missing, manifested by the abundant clips still in evidence. It sits brutally low over mesh split-rims, it has a sumptuously trimmed interior, and both ends scream purpose - there's a sublime twin centre-exit exhaust at the rear and a get-out-of-the-way spoiler on the chin. In any other situation I'd probably want to either refit the trim or smooth over the clips, but the overall aesthetic somehow seems to work here. A thoroughly modern interpretation of the '02.
