The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is one of those brilliant historical anomalies that we should all be thankful for. It may look like a mkV Escort (which is, let's be honest, the least desirable Escort) but is in fact a sort of chopped-about Sierra Sapphire 4WD Cosworth with an adrenalised Escort bodyshell plonked on top. This means that there's a whole world of competition-derived tuning potential; rally-bred drivetrain upgrades, touring car-spec turbos, the sky's the limit.
...or you could go completely bloody mad and turn one into a dragster.
This little red demon has a 6.1-litre Chevy small-block V8 under the bonnet, boosted by a pair of massive turbos; with boost at 19psi it kicks out 850bhp, and there's potential for 1100bhp+. The Cosworth body addenda and Compomotive MOs give this Escort a very traditional fast Ford aesthetic - particularly with those Morrette lights - but there are plenty of clues that this is home to more than a tweaked YB: the carbon-fibre seats (and, er, carbon-fibre everything else inside), the vast semi-slicks, the bonnet cutouts revealing those enormous turbos... oh yeah, and the parachute. It may have started as a genuine Cossie, but it's now a 2WD, Chevrolet-engined automatic with a live rear axle. Brilliantly silly.
