Patina: you can fake or force it, but it's better if you don't.Courtesy of Slam Media, here we have a Dutch import '67 1300 Beetle in a beautifully old-school shade of Java Green. Having spent an overly long period abandoned in a British field, it was rescued by a compassionate soul and treated to a full mechanical overhaul; the entire floorpan was replaced, and every nut, bolt and component under the skin has been renewed. Engine, suspension, gearbox and brakes are now all top-notch, with a few choice upgrades to weave a little uniqueness in - narrowed front beam, dropped spindles, adjustable spring plates, and a very shiny set of US Radar wheels. The bodywork, however... that bears the wear and scars of all of its forty-five years. And it looks all the better for it.

Fashion is transitory, and often cyclical. What is fashionable now may seem laughable in twenty years time; by the same token, trends of the past can seem misguided or just plain wrong when viewed through a modern filter. (Look at the 1990s enthusiasm for fibreglass bodykits [or the early-noughties penchant for the bolt-on aluminium wing] when viewed alongside today's 'stanced' hipsters...)

Built from eBay is a web series in which the popular auction site teams up with a cluster of American tuning magazines to create four unique cars. Team Hot Rod, Team Four Wheeler, Team European Car and Team Lowrider each start with a tired car purchased from an eBay seller and transform it into something awesome - viewers then vote on the winner.

Modifying a Porsche 911 is a tricky thing to do well. Sure, there are a lot of modified examples out there, but they quite often follow a solely performance-oriented route; outlandishly different aesthetics are a risky business.
